The Lady Reds and Newcastle Jets produced an exciting 1-1 draw in their W-League clash at Coopers Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Both goals came in the second half giving the crowd a tense and dramatic climax to the encounter.

The Lady Reds started the brighter of the two sides, dominating the early possession before getting the ball into excellent attacking positions.

Tiarne Powell looked menacing with every forward movement while Marijana Rajcic proved a constant threat to the Newcastle defence.

Despite their dominance, Newcastle would produce the first chance of the game with a Caprice Dydasco thunderbolt striking the bar.

Newcastle again squandered a golden chance when Chloe Logarzo’s effort from close range was brilliantly saved Kaitlyn Savage.

Adelaide also had good opportunities but struggled to get a clear shot away at the Newcastle goal, frustrating supporters and players.

The second half started with a flurry of chances for Newcastle, Adelaide goalkeeper Savage facing a mountain of pressure. The shot-stopper managed to keep everything out with a string of magnificent saves.

Savage’s most impressive effort came from a Newcastle corner when her incredible reflexes prevented an almost certain goal.

Adelaide then enjoyed a period of dominance with Georgia Sutton whipping in many delightful balls to the Adelaide forwards.

The continual attacking nature seemed to indicate a goal was likely and in the 60th minute that’s exactly what happened.

Newcastle failed to clear a dangerous corner which would allow Tiarne Powell to cleverly finish from close range, causing the crowd at Coopers Stadium to erupt in unison.

With Adelaide now leading the charge Newcastle was forced to open up even more to get themselves back into the encounter.

The Novacastrians continued to push for the equalizer sending the Adelaide defence back further with every passing minute.

Small holes began to appear in the Adelaide defence as fatigue set in. Newcastle would capitalise on this in the 81st minute and equalized through Tara Andrews.

The silky forward made it 1-1 as she expertly finished from close range after turning in Adriana Davis’ deflected shot.

It was a pulsating finish to the encounter with both teams determined to snatch a winner.

Despite their efforts however no more goals would be forthcoming seeing the game end in a draw, a result both teams thoroughly deserved.

Adelaide United remain in the top two on the Westfield W-League ladder while the Newcastle Jets move up to sixth position.
