Newcastle Jets needed a win to secure a chance at finals football this season but an impressive chip from Victory’s Natasha Dowie dampened their campaign to give the Melbourne side all three points.

The game kicked off with the Jets dominating possession in the first ten minutes, creating some good opportunities with no luck.

The 13th minute marked an unexpected change to the tempo as Victory’s Dowie sped past the scarce Newcastle defence to chip keeper Hannah Southwell, who couldn’t manage to get high enough to deflect the ball, for a brilliant goal.

Newcastle countered with some impressive chances as Melbourne’s Alexandra Natoli headed the ball into her own net in the 19th minute, only to be saved by the Assistant Referee calling Jenna Kingsley offside.

Chloe Logarzo was quick to come back in the 21st minute with a powerful strike from outside the 18-yard box headed for the goal but scraped outside the woodwork to fly past the woodwork.

Hannah Southwell did well to deny Victory with a clean collection of the strike put towards her in the 29th minute.

Tara Andrews then missed two clear chances to equalise for Newcastle, failing to connect the header in the 37th minute and again in the 38th.

A great chance came for the Jets with a free kick awarded outside the 18-yard-box after Annabel Martin made a nasty challenge.

Logarzo took the kick well, sending it on target but Victory keeper Cassandra Dimovski knocked it over the bar and out for a corner.

Melbourne hit the sheds on top as a desperate Newcastle looked to reset.

Newcastle looked dangerous starting the second but yet again fizzled out after a series of misjudged decisions.

Jenna Kingsley missed a beautiful cross from Caprice Dydasco in the 52nd as the ball slid past her head and out of play.

Malissa Taranto had a good chance to double the lead for Victory from long range but it fired straight over the bar.

Sophie Nenadovic came on in the 80th minute only to be sent off in the 86th after two yellow cards within six minutes for dangerous challenges.

Down to ten players the Jets couldn’t find an equalizer, leaving the 13th minute goal the deal-breaker in a 1-0 win for Melbourne Victory.
