Melbourne City to host FFA Cup Final after defeating Victory

Melbourne City will play Sydney FC in the Westfield FFA Cup Final for 2016 after defeating the Melbourne Victory 2-0 at AAMI Park, thanks to goals from Luke Brattan and Fernando Brandan.

After locking horns just two weeks ago Victory and City went into tonight’s match with a chance at silverware on offer.

Tempers flared throughout the game with referee Shaun Evans having to put out several early spot fires amongst the players.

Victory began with high pressure all over the ground, giving particular attention to Socceroo Tim Cahill who couldn’t replicate his derby heroics from a week ago but put in a good stint.

City looked dangerous early down the left flank with combinations between Fornaroli and Brandan that nearly resulted in a Cahill goal five minutes into the match.

But the Victory press seemed to work with Melbourne City struggling to settle early.

Yet in the 9th minute City broke the deadlock.

Brandan received the ball on the left and after running at Jason Geria slid the ball to Brattan at the top of the box who smashed the ball past a diving Thomas.

The goal was initially ruled offside by the linesman as Cahill was in an offside position, potentially interfering with Thomas’s line of view.

Evans, after discussion with his assistant controversially overturned the decision to Victory’s despair.

Victory didn’t roll over though with multiple chances of their own in the first period, the best of which came in the 29th minute. Berisha sent the ball over the crossbar after a wonderful Marco Rojas cut back.

Victory did receive a potential lifeline from the referee as Geria only escaped with a yellow card after a studs up challenge on Brandan.

At halftime City held a 1-0 lead but Kevin Muscat would’ve been the happy with a much improved display from his players.

The second half continued in the same manner with early chances falling to both Brandan and Broxham who’s shot was deflected just past the upright.

Victory thought they had equalised in the 71st minute after Rojas headed in from close range only for the linesman to rule Berisha’s involvement in the build up offside, leaving Muscat fuming.

But Muscat’s men were left red-faced after Nick Ansell lost the ball whilst playing out from the back, eventuating in a Fernando Brandan goal, making it 2-0 to City.

City started to boss proceedings around the ground with Victory slipping in the closing stages, rounding out a convincing second half display from the light blue side of Melbourne.

Melbourne City will face an in form Sydney FC in the FFA Cup Final which is to be played at AAMI Park on November 30th.
