W-League | United stump Roar on home turf

Canberra United managed to collect a 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday, with the home side failing to fend off a trick shot by United’s Ashleigh Sykes.

A cagey first half saw plenty of midfield action and equal attempts on both sides, and Roar’s dominant possession and field position should have seen the home side take the points.

Emily Gielnik fired the first warning shot, sending it high over the nets followed by a free kick on Canberra’s end cleared by Clare Polkinghorne.

Brisbane’s Katrina Gorry looked fierce on the field yesterday demonstrating some sensational footwork and consecutive attempts to score.

Despite such efforts Roar were unable to convert due to a standout performance by United keeper Trudy Burke.

With 20 minutes gone, Tameka Butt had fans on the edge of their seats as she weaved her way around Canberra’s defenders to deliver a close yet skewed high ball at the cross bar.

Jasmyne Spencer ensured Brisbane had their work cut out for them, managing to step her way around almost an entire field of players for an off target shot over the net.

Gorry collected the first yellow card of the game for a foul on Spencer; the collision lead to the United player leaving the field injured and out for the rest of the match.

Canberra pressed from the opening whistle of the second half, with Ashleigh Sykes quickly collecting the team’s first goal thanks to a well-timed cross by Michelle Heyman.

With just twenty minutes left in the game Summer O’Brien was handed a yellow card for holding Michelle Heyman and Brisbane conceded a freekick for a hand ball; Mackenzie Arnold was able to make the save.

The final ten minutes saw Brisbane fight tirelessly for an equalising point, making five consecutive attempts and Canberra struggling to defend.

Burke stepped up yet again to deflect all shots by Roar, securing United the 0-1 win on the final whistle.

The defeat leaves Brisbane sitting at fifth on the ladder leading into their fourth match against Western Sydney Wanderers on November 26.
