Kerr reigns supreme as Glory beat Sky Blues

Perth Glory have leapt to fourth on the Westfield W-League table, after dominating Sydney FC to a 1-0 win at Dorrien Gardens in Perth.

Perth were astute in possession and compact in defence, making Sydney wait until the 33rd minute to register their first shot of the game.

It was a Samantha Kerr show once again and the Matilda caused all sorts of trouble for Sky Blues right-back Georgia Yoeman-Dale throughout the afternoon, opening the scoring with a fabulous goal in the 18th minute.

Shawn Billam connected for a clever one-two with the pacey Kerr releasing the superstar on goal and she obligingly smashed it home to complete a high quality passage for the home side.

Kerr should have doubled her team’s advantage in the 29th minute after an excellent pass from Billam released Vanessa Di Bernardo down the right flank, but Kerr could only watch her subsequent connection float over the crossbar.

Sydney warmed into the match the longer the first half went on and in the 37th minute Kyah Simon channelled her inner David Beckham, attempting an audacious long-range effort from 40 yards.

Perth were clearly the better side throughout the opening 45 minutes and deservedly entered the interval with a 1-0 lead.

The second half carried on in similar fashion to the first with Perth assuming ascendency from the off and pinning the Sky Blues back in their own half.

The first chance of the second period came after Sky Blues‘ keeper Shamiran Khamis miscued an attempted clearance into the path of Glory skipper Kerr, however she could only manage to pull the resulting effort wide.

Every time Perth attacked in the match the ball was at the feet of mercurial captain Kerr and in the 66th minute the Glory number 20 found space for a one-on-one chance, however failed to get the ball past Khamis.

Perth were able to smartly hold on to possession to see the game through its final moments and completely outplayed the Sydney outfit to claim a 1-0 victory.

Perth travel to Elite System Football Centre to face 8th placed Adelaide United next week in a match they should hope to claim all three points.
