W-League | Victory continue winless season against Jets

Round 7 of the Westfield W-League saw a travelling Melbourne Victory fall short of three points once again, drawing 1-1 with Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Melbourne Victory attacker Natasha Dowie went shoulder to shoulder with defender Megan Oyster in the opening minutes. Securing herself a one on one with Jets goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland, Oyster sent a misplaced shot over the goal.

The Jets had splintered chances throughout the first ten minutes but were constantly placed under pressure by a breaking Dowie. The number nine continued her breakaway runs through the Jets defence and had several missed opportunities in front of goal.

In the 18th Dowie finally found the back of the net. After receiving a through ball she broke away to beat Jets goalkeeper Rowland. An open goal saw defender Oyster scrambling to the goal line but an unfortunate air swing gave Victory the 1-0 lead.

Oyster expressed the home team’s frustration with the scoreline when she tried to slow the counterattack that had proven to be Victory’s main source of play. In the process she earned herself the first yellow card of the match.

Just before halftime skipper Gema Simon almost scored the equaliser for the Jets, with a soaring long range shot 25 yards out inching itself just over the crossbar.

Another opportunity to equalise came following a perfect through ball from midfielder Arin Gilliland Jennifer Hoy. The American broke the defence and was one on one with the goalkeeper before pushing the ball just wide to keep the score 1-0 for Victory.

A chip from substitute Grace Macintyre to Hoy’s feet allowed the international import to cross the ball behind the defence to an attacking Ashlee Brodigan. Unfortunately Victory goalkeeper Bethany Mason-Jones picked up the young striker’s shot.

An equalizer came in the dying minutes for the home side when Hoy was on the receiving end of a through ball for her second attempt one on one with goalkeeper Mason-Jones, making sure the ball went in the net this time around.

The Jets dominated the second half of play during their Friday night match to secure themselves a 1-1 draw after a rather lazy start, leaving Melbourne Victory chasing that elusive win.
