Western Sydney Wanderers kept their the festive season kicking for their fans with a 2-1 Boxing Day win against Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Megan Oyster played a lax ball back to goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland in the opening minutes to get the home supporters’ blood pumping. Thankfully the ball went out for a corner, that despite the favourable wind, was cleared away.

The score was opened in the 7th minute when the Jets’ attacking pressure secured them a cross from striker Emma Stanbury. Stanbury’s midair cross was met by Jenna Kingsley’s head to secure the 1-0 lead for the home side.

Minutes later Wanderers’ striker Katherine Stengel beat Jets’ goalkeeper Rowland before a sliding Cassidy Davis cleared her shot off the line for a corner. The corner kick led to a goalmouth scramble that was finally punched in by Stengel to equal the scores 1-1.

Jets’ defender Davis tried to knee the ball clear from the 18-yard box before it diverted and went backwards over her head. Western Sydney’s Washington Spirit import Stengel saw her opportunity and met Rowland before chipping her to take the lead 2-1.

Wanderers’ midfielder Paige Nielsen almost increased the visiting side’s lead when her footwork left Megan Oyster on the ground in the box. Her chipped shot soared over Newcastle goalkeeper Rowland before it narrowly went just wide of the goal.

The second half opened with a penalty shot after Wanderers’ goalkeeper Jade Mathyssen-Whyman took down Jennifer Hoy. Referee Lara Lee was reluctant to give the penalty at first, before awarding it to Newcastle. Hoy stepped up to face Whyman again as her shot hit the post before rebounding out, keeping the score 2-1.

Rowland was in a better position for the Wanderers’ long shot this time from midfielder Kendall Fletcher. Rowland tipped the ball over the crossbar in a midair save to deny the visiting side an extended lead.

The Jets and Wanderers both needed the three points to give themselves any chance at finals football in the Westfield W-League. Each side secured themselves ample opportunities at both ends with the Wanderers winning 2-1, as the Jets were unlucky not to equalise in the second half.
