Five goal classic as Melbourne Victory survive Roar

Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar played out a five goal thriller in front of 21,103 people at AAMI Park on Friday night.

The Victory came out of the blocks early lead by their talisman, one of the best players in the A-League at the moment, James Troisi.

The Socceroos had his hand in all three of the Victory’s first half goals scoring a superb free kick in the 11th minute and setting up both Marco Rojas and Besart Berisha with delightful through balls all before the half hour mark.

A 3-0 lead fell away for the Victory as Brisbane Roar, through an absolute peach of a freekick from Dimitri Petratos from all of 30 yards, started their comeback.

Nine minutes after Petratos’ contender for goal of the season, James Donachie could do nothing but deflect a Brandon Borrello shot past Lawrence Thomas, silencing the Victory fans in the process and giving Roar a sniff at 3-2.

If it weren’t for the half time whistle sounding we might have seen a Brisbane equaliser as the flow of chances was definitely with the Queenslanders.

The start of the second half was all Brisbane with the visitors having the main share of possession.

Things worsened for the Victory on 58 minutes as Besart Berisha was sent off for an elbow on Luke De Vere, replays showing De Vere had convinced the officials there was contact where there was not.

Referee Chris Beath was harassed by an incensed home crowd and De Vere was public enemy number one in Melbourne after the incident.

The Victory had their backs against the wall with Brisbane hitting them with attack after attack.

However Melbourne had a chance to seal the three points and would’ve had them if it weren’t for Theo producing a fine double save to deny Rojas a second in the 76th minute.

Despite being a man down the Victory still had some fight in them and Troisi nearly scored a delightful second but his effort curled onto the upright and was eventually cleared.

Late pressure from Brisbane wasn’t enough to stop the Victory holding on to their 3-2 lead to record their sixth straight win.
