Jets prove too strong for Roar

In stark contrast to their Round 2 performance, Brisbane Roar succumbed 3-2 to Newcastle Jets at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, in front of a 14, 470 strong crowd.

The nonplussed bout was neck and neck well into the second half with Thomas Oar managing to fire home a dipping shot just 15 minutes into the match.

Jets collected an equalising point in the final kick of the half when Andrew Hoole powered through Brisbane’s defence and found the far corner of the net.

Jets’ Wayne Brown made a quick departure during the break for the next flight home, upon hearing the news that his expecting wife had gone into labour.

As the second half got underway, Jets were quick to return an onslaught of opportunities leading to their eventual second goal by Andrew Nabbout, who managed to head the ball past Michael Theo into the back post.

80 minutes into the contest Jamie Maclaren found the ball and fired a hefty ball straight into the back of the net however an offside call kept the score at 2-1.

Nigel Boogaard soon after earnt himself a yellow card for bringing down Jack Hingert in the box, conceding a free kick for Brisbane.

Maclaren stepped up for the penalty and sledged it straight past Jack Duncan, the keeper committing himself the wrong way for the save.

With just ten minutes left in the match, a fiery Theo claimed a high ball following a collision with Morten Nordstrand, who finished the play with a goal as Theo collected himself from the ground.

Referees handed Theo a yellow card for protesting the call and an additional five minutes was added to the clock as Jets secured their 3-2 lead.

Despite a mammoth effort by Brisbane to equalise in the final minutes of the game, Duncan stepped up to deflect all chances and Roar were left stripped of their undefeated home ground streak.

Next week Brisbane will take on second standing Melbourne Victory away from home, where they will fight for points sure to make or break their fourth ladder spot in the semi finals.
