W-league | Glory sneak past Wanderers

In their final game of the season Western Sydney Wanderers suffered a last minute heartbreak as Perth Glory scored in injury time to secure a 1-0 win at Popondetta Park.

With only pride on the line having missed out on a finals spot prior to kick-off, the Wanderers were showing plenty of enthusiasm early with Katie Stengel heading wide and Joanne Burgess grazing the crossbar with a free-kick inside the opening ten minutes.

After a quiet start, Perth started to find their feet in attack with Alyssa Mautz, leading the line in Samantha Kerr’s absence through suspension, forcing a routine save out of Jada Mathyssen-Whyman after 18 minutes with a tame header.

In a see-sawing first 45 minutes, Western Sydney spurned several great opportunities with Joanne Burgess lifting an effort over the crossbar from a great position, as Glory themselves reduced to speculative efforts mainly from outside the box.

After a goalless first half, both sides emerged from the break clearly intent on opening the scoring.

First Burgess had a header from right in front saved excellently by Gabrielle Dal Busco after 52 minutes before Glory countered straight after forcing Whyman into a fine save of her own down low to deny Mautz.

On the hour mark, Stengel looked set open the scoring for Western Sydney only for Dal Busco to somehow pluck out a Helen Petinos cross.

With the clock ticking down, play started to get scrappy with consecutive yellow cards in a matter of minutes summing up both sides frustrations at not being able to open the scoring.

Glory went within centimetres of doing just that with just over five minutes to play only for the crossbar to deny a well hit Rosie Dee Sutton effort.

Not to be denied, a persistent Perth would grab a winner in injury time as substitute Caitlin Doeglas buried an effort to secure the visitors all three points.

The Wanderers were ultimately unlucky to walk away empty handed while the Glory go into finals football with a hard fought win.
