W-League | Jets keep finals dream alive

Round 12 was a must win match for both Newcastle Jets and Brisbane Roar at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday, with the Jets side keeping their finals dreams afloat by beating Roar 2-1.

Jets striker Jennifer Hoy hit the back of the net with a midair header off a corner in the 9th minute to grab the lead for the home side, making it 1-0 to Newcastle.

Newcastle were denied a second after a perfect cross from midfielder Arin Gilliland found Jenna Kingsley’s head and floated into the back of the net, before Kingsley was called offside.

A right-footed volley from Roar’s Emily Gielnik forced Jets’ goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland to push the ball over the crossbar for a corner to deny the visiting side the equaliser.

The equaliser came shortly before halftime when central defender Cassidy Davis took down Tameka Butt in the box. The controversial penalty saw Butt step up and take the shot to just edge it past an outstretched Rowland and make it 1-1 going into halftime.

For the first quarter of the second half, both teams appeared even with neither creating a significant chance at goal. The first half desperation of both sides seemed to have been lost in the sheds and subsequent substitutions ensued.

After a three game absence, recovered Gilliland took matters into her own hands by beating her defender and taking a long range shot that forced Roar’s goalkeeper, Mackenzie Arnold, to palm it over the bar. Four corners followed, but the Jets were unable to finish their chances in the box.

Arnold was sent from the field in the 81st after giving Hoy an elbow to the head after collecting the ball. Gilliland stepped up to take the penalty as reserve goalkeeper Georgina Worth stepped in and mad the save of her career to push the ball over the cross bar and deny the Jets the lead.

A cross from substitute Rhali Dobson to Hoy in extra time secured the Jets the 2-1 lead. Dobson’s cross beat Worth and fell at Hoy’s feet, who made no mistake and buried the match winning goal.

Newcastle’s 2-1 victory keeps their finals football hope afloat with the three points proving crucial the side to progress up the ladder. In Round 13 Brisbane Roar will travel to play Melbourne City, while Newcastle Jets face top of the table Sydney FC at Lambert Park.
