It was six points from nine for the Phoenix, as they fell to a late Jamie Maclaren goal against Brisbane Roar to end their dramatic week at Westpac Stadium.

Off the back of a 3-0 dismantling of Melbourne Victory on Tuesday, Wellington Phoenix named an unchanged side against what turned out to be a resolute Roar outfit.

The away side were the first to threaten, Jack Hingert blasting against Glen Moss’ upright from the edge of the area.

Moss was called into action moments later as Tommy Oar drove through the heart of the defence forcing Moss into a fine save.

The Roar were quickly gaining the ascendancy, Manuel Arana spraying what should have been a tap in narrowly wide.

Roy Krishna saw his sides first chance of the match saved by Michael Theo. Cutting onto his right foot, the Fijian did well to test the Keeper from distance

Whilst the Roar maintained the lion’s share of possession, the Phoenix looked to hit on the counter attack.

Roly Bonevacia found himself in a terrific possession following an exquisite first touch off a Kosta Barbarouses flick. The inform midfielder was unlucky as he lost his footing before being able to get a shot off.

Brandon Borrello saw a long range free kick palmed away by Moss as the half wore on, but any guilt edge opportunities were few and far between.

As the second half started it was the Nix who looked the brighter.

Bonavacia found the side netting following a lung bursting run, then just minutes later Barbarouses narrowly avoided finding an unmarked Shane Smeltz in front of an open goal.

Jacob Tratt fired straight at Theo from a handy position, and found himself searching again just moments later.

The defender opened his account for the home side in the mid-week Victory win, the taste for goal a feeling he seemed to have enjoyed.

Vice captain Vince Lia was substituted shortly before the hour mark for what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Fans will hope it isn’t serious enough to keep the midfielder out for long.

Dimitri Patratos’ volley had the Yellow fever sweating, their fears quashed as Moss caught with an acrobatic save.

Moss was tested twice more in a matter of minutes. Brandon Borrello and Dimitri Petratos saw their shots saved well as the away side went looking for a winner.

And it came just minutes before the final whistle.

Borello, pouncing upon a shocking error from Captain Andrew Durante saw substitute Jamie Maclaren comfortably finish into a gaping net to make it 1-0 to Brisbane Roar.

That is how it stayed for the remainder of the game, a sour end to an otherwise cheery week for the men in yellow.
