Brisbane Roar put a halt to Newcastle’s unbeaten streak against them this season with a 3-1 defeat, albeit over a side reduced to 10 men and a coach sent to the bleachers.

In the opening minutes Brisbane defenders Corey Brown and Avram Papadopoulos took down Aleksandr Kokko in the box in a two-man sandwich laced with a sliding tackle from behind.

Andrew Nabbout stepped up for the home side and sent Roar goalkeeper Michael Theo the wrong way to slot the ball past him and give the Jets the lead in the 9th minute.

Mayhem broke out near the 30th minute after Jets captain Jason Hoffman received a controversial second yellow card for blocking Roar attacker Manuel Arana.

The captain pleaded his case but was sent from the field along with the Jets coach Mark Jones for his sideline disagreement with referee Jarred Gillett.

Down to ten men and with their coach sitting in the stands the Jets held onto their 1-0 lead into the break, maintaining some of the best possession the side has seen this season.

Shortly after halftime, a cross caused some drama in the box for Newcastle. With the ball ricocheting around the 18 yard box, it fell to Brisbane attacker Arana’s feet. The short-range shot was saved on the line by goalkeeper Tomislav Arcaba to deny the visitors the equaliser.

The equaliser did eventually come after Newcastles Andrew Hoole was picked up for pulling Roar substitute Thomas Broichs shirt in a defensive corner. From the penalty spot, Jamie Maclaren put the ball away to equalise the scores 1-1 in the 61st minute.

A second goal for Roar came in the 74th minute after a long range shot from Arana was blocked and followed up by Maclaren, gifting the striker his second goal of the match to help Roar lead 2-1 for the first time in the match.

The final goal of the match was scored by Nicholas D’Agostino, after he was subbed on minutes prior, to take the Roars score to 3-1 and squash the Jets chance of a comeback in the 89th minute.

Brisbane Roar move up to fourth spot after securing the three points in Round 22. The Jets sit eighth after their 3-1 loss and must win their remaining five matches if they hope to progress into finals football this year.
