Adelaide United came from behind in a tense affair against Central Coast Mariners to secure their second win of the season.

Adelaide escaped with all three points from the encounter as substitute Ryan Kitto struck in injury time to secure a 2-1 victory for the Reds.

Central Coast will be disappointed following their impressive showing against champions Sydney FC last round.

Mariners started the better of the two sides as Daniel De Silva’s mishit fizzled behind Izzo’s goal while Andrew Hoole’s well struck cross narrowly evaded his teammates minutes later.

The hosts enjoyed the better start however Adelaide began to force their way back into the encounter with Papa Diawara and Ryan Kitto testing Ben Kennedy.

Central Coast continued to challenge the Reds defence with Jake McGing causing headaches for Ben Garuccio with the Mariners right back setting up a great chance for Kwabena Appiah-Kubi who came within inches of making contact.

Marco Kurz’s men were quick to respond and had their best opportunity to opening the scoring when Nikola Mileusnic’s shot struck the crossbar and rebounded back into play.

Mileusnic’s effort proved costly as the Mariners forced their way into the opposition’s half and earned a penalty after Connor Pain was unlawfully challenged by Diawara.

Dutch midfielder Wout Brama stepped up and calmly converted the resulting spot kick to give Paul Okon’s men the lead.

The Mariners were only able to hold onto their slim advantage for a matter of minutes as Daniel Adlung struck the equaliser for the visitors.

The German midfielder opened his account for the Reds as his perfectly timed volley found the back of the net in spectacular fashion.

The resurgent Reds new found confidence began to show as they continued to ask questions of the Mariners’ defence.

George Blackwood’s shot for Adelaide caused a save from Mariners goalkeeper Paul Izzo as the visitors held their momentum for the closing stages of the encounter.

The visitors’ pressure eventually paid off as Ryan Kitto struck in injury time to secure all three points for Marco Kurz’s men.
