A dominant Sydney FC defeated Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium 3-1. Brisbane were no match for Sydney despite the short turnaround for the home team after Tuesday nights FFA Cup final win.

It was a new look side for the Sky Blues as Graham Arnold’s men were without marquee man Milos Ninkovic and left-back Michael Zullo whilst leading goal scorer Bobo started from the bench.

The Roar on the other hand entered the game unchanged from the side that stunned Melbourne City just a week ago.

However, it was the visiting side that looked flat in the opening minutes as they failed to withstand a barrage of pressure from the champions.

After just seven minutes an Adrian Mierzejewski pass found Matt Simon who deftly flicked it into the path of David Carney who finished to open the scoring.

The hosts doubled their lead less than ten minutes later after a Luke Wilkshire cross was flicked onto Jacob Pepper’s hand by David Carney.

The referee and the VAR both agreed that it was a handball and Adrian Mierzejewski stepped up and fired the spot kick into the roof of the net, capping off a great week for the Polish international.

Midway through the second half and just days after coming to the aid of a ball boy in the FFA Cup final, Matt Simon was involved in another heated moment when he angrily confronted Brisbane defender Avram Papadopoulos.

Replays showed that Papadopoulos spat in the direction of Simon who pushed the Roar defender in retaliation. Referee Alex King decided to send off both men after a lengthy consultation with the VAR.

Matt Simon would have barely made it to the locker room before his side scored again. A beautifully whipped in cross from Jordy Buijs found an unforgivably open Sebastian Ryall who headed home his first goal since April, 2014.

Brisbane pulled a goal back late into injury time after an Eric Bautheac cross found Jack Hingert in the box. Hingert’s shot was aided by a deflection but it was enough to spoil Andrew Redmayne’s chance at a clean sheet.

That goal will be little consolation for John Aloisi as his side was comfortably handled by a rampant Sydney FC. He also has to worry about a possible 6 match ban for Papadopoulpos if the FFA judge him to have spat at Simon.

For Sydney it was a comfortable win after an eight-day stretch that saw them earn six points as well as a piece of silverware.
