Newcastle Jets dominated from start to finish as they dismantled Western Sydney Wanderers to claim a 4-0 win at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday evening.

Hopes for Wanderers that their season may have been kick-started under Josep Gombau following last week’s win over Central Coast Mariners were a distant memory after the brutal 90 minutes.

A festive atmosphere in Newcastle was boosted by the return of active support – plus a few Jets old boys – in Bay 1, the old stomping ground of foundation supporter group The Squadron.

The mood was seemingly transferred onto the pitch as the home side flew out of the blocks and were only denied an opener five minutes in by the thinnest of margins as Andrew Nabbout’s header was ruled out for offside.

Early pressure told however with Wanderers unable to keep out wave after wave of Jets attacking and eventually John Koutroumbis found the bottom corner of the net after a well worked move just 10 minutes in.

Newcastle’s domination almost saw them double their lead shortly before the half hour mark as they were cruelly denied again, this time by the post after a deflected shot from Steven Ugarkovic.

Even with Brendan Santa(lab) on the pitch there was to be no Christmas cheer for Wanderers in the first half with a tame Mark Bridge header straight at Glen Moss the best chance they could muster.

After a more even opening to the second half it was temporary winger Jason Hoffman who burst through the Wanderers defence and slotted the ball past Vedran Janjetovic to give Newcastle the vital second goal and take complete control of the match.

Any lingering hopes of a Wanderers fight back were swiftly put to bed just eight minutes later as Ben Kantarovski rose to header home a corner for his third goal of the season.

An exquisite Dimitri Petratos back-heel played Ugarkovic through in the box and he made no mistake by curling a shot out of the reach of Janjetovic and putting the final nail in the Wanderers’ coffin.

The Jets will see out 2017 with a trip to Melbourne Victory next weekend while Wanderers will look to turn around their horror season when they welcome Melbourne City on New Years Day.
