Newcastle Jets scored two contentious goals to claim a last minute 2-1 win over Adelaide United at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday evening.

Both sides were coming off hard fought wins with the Jets claiming all three points at the death in Perth and Adelaide winning a bruising encounter with 10-men against Melbourne Victory.

Players from both teams looked lethargic from the get-go and it was reflected in the stats at half-time with just one shot on target registered through a tame effort from Adelaide.

The scrappy first half saw a number of cheap passes and fouls given away and just one clear cut chance that fell to the Jets as Ivan Vujica’s whipped low cross was deflected just past the post by Andrew Nabbout.

Newcastle took a contentious lead early in the second half when Nabbout curled the ball home from an offside position but was judged to have been played to him from a tackle by Vince Lia.

Adelaide struck back through a sweeping counterattack just 10 minutes later as George Blackwood finished from right in front following a square ball Michael Marrone.

Moments later Jets keeper Glen Moss was forced into a smart save to deny Marrone a goal to add to his assist as the visitors continued to pile on the pressure following their equaliser.

The home side wasted a glorious chance to retake the lead with 10 minutes remaining after a cross from Jason Hoffman found the head of Nabbout who squared the ball but was unable to find the onrushing Joe Champness from right in front.

Leaving it late for the second time in two weeks, Newcastle snatched all three points after being given a soft penalty for handball that was converted by Dimitri Petratos.

In the aftermath of the goal Adelaide assistant coach Filip Tapalović was sent off for his protests to the fourth official for what he saw was an incorrect decision even after it was checked by the VAR.

The Jets go four points clear in second following the win and welcome Western Sydney Wanderers to town next Friday while Adelaide will count themselves unlucky as they head home to host Central Coast Mariners on Boxing Day.
