Substitute Blake Powell was the hero as Central Coast Mariners defeated Perth Glory 1-0 at Central Coast Stadium on Sunday night.

The match was largely dominated by the Mariners but appeared destined to end in stalemate until Powell stepped off the bench late to claim the team’s third win of the campaign.

The first clear cut chance of the afternoon came at the half hour mark when a beautiful cross from Jake McGing found the diving of head of Kwabena Appiah who was denied by the gloves of Liam Reddy.

That chance brought a pedestrian game to life with McGing playing the role of creator again just moments later. The Mariners’ fullback fired a lot hit ball across the face of goal but just out of reach of Connor Pain’s outstretched foot.

They were brief periods of excitement in a half that the home side dominated but played largely in the centre of the field.

The second half started in similar fashion with the Mariners failing to capitalise on more periods of possession. What opportunities the hosts did have were squandered in what was looking to be a frustrating night for Paul Okon’s side. That was until the 78th minute when the Mariners finally broke the deadlock.

The goal came from a beautiful move by Blake Powell who slid a deftly weighted pass behind the defence to Danny De Silva. The midfielder carried the ball with purpose into the box, drawing defenders before cutting it back to Powell who finished with authority into the roof of the net.

The win sees the Mariners jump into the top four for the first time this season and leaves Perth in a congested middle of the ladder.
