Sydney FC have extended their lead over second-placed Newcastle Jets following a 3-1 win against Melbourne Victory in the Big Blue at AAMI Park on Friday night.

A double from Bobo ensures the Sky Blues go nine points clear to continue their dominance as the league-leaders.

The Brazilian striker looks likely to take out the golden boot with a penalty and header taking him to 18 goals and now going at exactly one per match.

Substitute David Carney sealed the match late when he got away in the clear to confirm a big result.

Besart Berisha converted from the spot to open the scoring early in the second half but in the end only gave Victory a glimmer of hope.

Both teams came out for an intense contest and Victory did create some promising attacks within the first 15 minutes, including Berisha who had a couple off-target opportunities. Sydney were likely to score though, if not for the work of Lawrence Thomas.

Thomas made his return from injury and was made two diving saves that denied Adrian Mierzejewski. The first was the better of the two as Thomas reached across to parry the Pole’s well-struck volley.

The first goal of the match came just under an hour once Jai Ingham was taken down in the box from a clumsy tackle attempt by Josh Brillante.

Berisha took the penalty and side-footed into the bottom right to provide Victory real optimism of a scalp.

It didn’t take long for Sydney to equalise, within the blink of an eye Bobo levelled it up. A well weighted high cross by Luke Wilkshire begged someone to launch at it which Bobo did expertly.

Victory’s quest to win the game was severely hampered from the 77th minute when Jason Geria not only conceded a penalty, but was sent off for two yellow cards. Bobo was the one that was felled and took the responsibility to bag his brace.

Sydney doubled their advantage when Carney got played through with a perfect pass by Mierzejewski and had all the time in the world to finish through Thomas’ legs.

The result means Sydney go two wins from two this season against their Victory rivals, who will be frustrated they couldn’t keep up with Sydney for the full 90 minutes.
