Brisbane Roar leapfrogged Central Coast Mariners into the top six as they secured a 2-1 victory at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday night.

Roar took advantage two shocking Central Coast errors and secured back-to-back wins in the A-League with goals from Brett Holman and Matt McKay.

Boosted by the return of Daniel De Silva to the starting line-up, the Mariners were first to threaten the Roar when the 20-year-old almost unlocked their defence with an incisive through ball which cut across Brisbane’s penalty box.

Central Coast failed to make the most of their early dominance and they went behind when McKay pounced on Jacob Melling’s error before Holman struck to open the scoring for Roar.

John Aloisi’s side came close to doubling their lead towards the end of the first half as Massimo Maccarone attempted to round Mariners’ goalkeeper Ben Kennedy after Jack Hingert’s cross found the Italian unmarked just outside the six-yard area.

Another individual mistake led to Brisbane’s second goal of the night when Kennedy’s misplaced pass fell to McKay on the edge of the box. The Roar captain calmly passed the ball into the opposition’s net to double the lead for his side.

The Mariners halved the deficit minutes after the hour mark when Blake Powell’s strike flew into the back of the net after Lachlan Wales’ pass found the striker in space.

Paul Okon’s men continued to pressure the Roar’s resolve with substitute Storm Roux firing over the Brisbane goal however they failed to test Jamie Young and the visitors were able to hold on for their fifth league victory as they surged into the top six on the A-League ladder.
