Melbourne City have closed the gap on the top-two with a commanding 5-0 victory against Adelaide United at AAMI Park on Sunday night.

City needed to put in a good performance to catch up to the leading two teams and they did in some style.

Marcin Budzinski flourished as he put the hosts in a comfortable position with a brace before half-time.

With a deflected shot and a rebounded effort the Pole was the beneficiary of good fortune but made a positive contribution from the half-hour mark by scoring in the space of five minutes.

Dario Vidosic had his turn during second-half stoppage time with a double of his own, including a stunning volley that beat Daniel Margush purely with power.

Ross McCormack came on during the second half and joined in the fun after producing a world-class strike from 25 yards to help City run out convincing winners.

Daniel Arzani was one of the catalysts behind the big result with his quick feet and dribbling troubling Adelaide and even visibly unnerving the Reds at times.

It could’ve started well for the Reds though: Apostolos Stamatelopoulos had the first decent chance of the match after 15 minutes after racing clean through but his shot went straight at Dean Bouzanis who saved down low.

The City keeper produced an even better save from a one-on-one attempt by George Blackwood in another presentable opportunity for Adelaide chance that should’ve been buried.

That was the difference between the two teams with City’s finishing proving far more clinical. The victory and entertaining display sets up a tantalizing match-up against Newcastle Jets next round.
