Oriol Riera scored twice from the spot but brilliant goals from Dimitri Petratos and Andrew Nabbout secured the Jets a thrilling 2-2 draw against Western Sydney Wanderers at Spotless Stadium on Friday night.

The Wanderers could not have asked for a better homecoming to Spotless Stadium when they stunned their opponents with the opener.

Ikonomidis immediately lived up to the weeklong hype build up when he elegantly tucked his shot past Jack Duncan before the five minute mark. The euphoria was short-lived however when the VAR deemed his run off Marcelo Carrusca’s supplied pass offside and the goal decision was retracted.

The Jets couldn’t breathe a sigh of relief for long though, just a few minutes later Topor Stanley collided with Carrusca in the box and the Wanderers were gifted with a penalty and another opportunity to grab the opener.

Oriol Riera measured Duncan for a moment before slotting his penalty into the bottom left and earning his 10th A-League goal in the process.

Patricio Rodriguez was providing inspiration for the Jets with his flashy runs and managed to force Vedran Janjetovic into a rightward lunge to prevent the equaliser but the Red and Black managed to leave the half on top.

The prolific Dimitri Petratos came to the Jet’s aid shortly after the interval when he found the equaliser. Rodriguez was the architect with his run down the right flank before cutting a ball back toward the edge of the area.

Andrew Nabbout could have struck then and there but tactfully let the ball slide past allowing Petratos to fire the ball into the top right corner.

The Wanderers next goal again came following a controversial intervention from the VAR. Appeals against Topor Stanley for a hand ball inside the box looked to be dismissed as the game continued but after some deliberation another penalty was given.

Again Riera stepped up to the mark and the Spaniard put away his second penalty of the night this time pushing into the bottom right.

It only took a minute for the Jets to hit back.

Andrew Nabbout showed why he is now one of the A-Leagues’ most accomplished strikers when he collected the ball wide after the kickoff, took two touches then struck a shot with the outside boot from an impressive range to earn one of the most sublime goals of the year and once again bring scores level.

A bundle of close chances from both sides failed to find their mark as the game concluded, ensuring the Wanderers emerged far less unscathed than their last four nil thrashing at the hands of the Jets.
