Newcastle Jets claimed a hard-fought 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory at McDonald Jones Stadium thanks to a goal either side of half time from Nigel Boogaard and Riley Mcgree on Saturday evening.

Roy O’Donovan’s return up front for the Jets was the headline news going into the game as the second and fourth placed sides clashed for the third time this season.

It was that man O’Donovan who had the opening chance of the match as a ball swung in from Dimitri Petratos found the Irishman free in the box but he somehow nudged his header wide.

A scrappy first half was brought to life on the half hour mark when another perfectly weighted wide delivery from Petratos this time found the head of Boogaard who glanced the ball into the back of the net to give Newcastle the lead.

The half was rounded out by a chance for Besart Berisha when he was allowed freedom in the box to shoot but was somehow denied by Jack Duncan who showed cat-like reactions to go down low to his left to deny the striker.

A frantic minute of action shortly after the break firstly saw Duncan tip a driven corner onto the bar after it had taken a slight deflection off the head of a Jets defender.

Play then swept up the other end of the field to a 50/50 clash for the ball in front of goal between Andrew Nabbout and Lawrence Thomas with the goalkeeper coming off worse and having to be stretched from the field after a lengthy delay.

Sweeping team play from Newcastle saw Nabbout played through in the channel before hitting a first time ball across the six yard box that found McGree at the back post who made no mistake to score his first goal for the club and extend their lead in the match to two.

Berisha missed his second chance of the game with ten minutes to go as he was again given time in the box to swivel and shoot but dragged his shot narrowly wide across goal and it ultimately proved to be the last opportunity of the game as Newcastle cruised to victory.

The Jets now look to a tricky away trip to face Western Sydney Wanderers in a bid to consolidate second place while Victory welcome a resurgent Brisbane Roar on Friday night.
