Newcastle Jets pulled off one of their greatest ever victories as they came away 2-1 victors over Sydney FC after playing over 75 minutes with 10 men at a packed McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday evening.

The F/A-18 hornets flyover marked the start of the annual RAAF round for the Jets and it was a precursor for what turned out to be a bitterly fought top of the table clash.

The 18,000 strong crowd had barely settled in their seats when the match erupted following a Roy O’Donovan slap on the face of Jordy Buijs which earned the Irishman a red card after a VAR check with just 14 minutes on the clock.

Sydney’s first real opportunity on goal came just before the half hour mark when Adrian Mierzejewski’s free kick from out wide sailed over everyone’s head and crashed into the crossbar.

10-man Newcastle looked the better side in the first half and hit the lead just before the break thanks to a calm Dimitri Petratos penalty after Nikolai Topor-Stanley had been bundled over by Buijs in the box.

Just over five minutes had elapsed in the second half and Sydney were level when Buijs found himself in the limelight again, this time thanks to a beautifully flighted free kick that found the glancing head of Bobo before nestling in the back of the net.

Jets heads weren’t down for long as just three minutes later Andrew Nabbout hit a grass-cutting tracer bullet from 35-yards out that left Andrew Redmayne with no chance and put Newcastle back in front.

Newcastle were unlucky not to extend their lead shortly after with when fancy feet from Petratos got him past Sydney’s last line of defence in Alex Wilkinson only for the winger to smack his short firmly off the post.

Sydney were unable to ask Newcastle many serious questions in the final 15 minutes and it was in fact the home side who carved out a few great opportunities without result on the counter but did enough to hang on for one of their most famous victories in club history.

After a huge victory for the Jets have two weeks before they cross the ditch to face Wellington Phoenix while Sydney will look to bounce back when they welcome Brisbane Roar.
