Melbourne City completely outclassed Newcastle Jets thanks to a Dario Vidosic brace to run away 3-0 winners at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday evening.

The scene was set pre-game for a hugely important Easter clash which mattered confidence-wise for the Jets, who were spearheaded by the returning Roy O’Donovan and City had the chance to leapfrog Melbourne Victory and reclaim third spot.

City threatened early on the counter but it was Dimitri Petratos who was the first to draw a save from the keeper when his curling free kick was clawed out of the top corner by Dean Bouzanis.

As the half wore on City imposed themselves on the game with the Jets struggling to come to terms the threat posed by Daniel Arzani but it was Argentinian Bruno Fornaroli who gave the visitors the opener after sloppy marking at a corner from Newcastle.

Despite being behind the Jets lacked intensity after the break and were punished for poor marking from a corner again when Vidosic rose highest to win a clean header that gave Jack Duncan no chance at doubled the lead for the visitors.

Newcastle turned to their bench for inspiration and introduced Argentine star Pato Rodriguez  and later Joe Champness, but they provided little in the way of unlocking the now resolute City defence who looked content to sit back and hold their two goal lead.

The best the Jets were able to muster was a well worked move fifteen minutes from time that saw an Ivan Vujica square ball narrowly avoid the outstretched leg of O’Donovan in front of goal.

Melbourne made sure of the points in the latter stages thanks to a perfectly placed free kick from Vidosic that left Duncan helpless and handed the number 10 his second of the match and consigned the Jets to their second loss in as many weeks.

The Jets will look to pick up their form going into the finals at home to Perth Glory on Friday while third placed City look to cement their position when they entertain Central Coast Mariners next Saturday night.
