Newcastle Jets – Hippopotamus

The sleeping giant. The hippo spends much of its day basking in the sunlight or calmly navigating shallow waters. However, that all changes when they are provoked.

Like the Jets, Ernie Merrick has flicked the switch on the Hunter and returned Newcastle to their menacing best.

Melbourne City FC – Peacock

Known for their majestic tail feathers. The male peacock likes to mesmerize their mate with their elaborate displays. With Melbourne City not exactly crying poor, they court the opposition with their attractive star-studded line up.

Should never be underestimated. Victory were half asleep and just coming out of hibernation when the season began. However, as we approach the business end of the season, they are at their most lethal and look a real threat heading into the finals.

Adelaide United – Bull

An impulsive animal which can wreak havoc. United have the potential to cause an upset on their day, history has shown that if you try to get under the skin of coach Marco Kurz, you will lose.

Brisbane Roar FC – Silverback Gorilla

A mature leader which exerts dominance and power wherever it goes. Roar have the most experienced squad in the competition this season with the likes of Massimo Maccarone, Fahid Ben Khalfallah and Jade North.

Natural leaders on the pitch, they have been around the blocks and know what is needed to succeed.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC – Orangutan

Recognised for nurturing their young, coach Josep Gombau has made a habit of getting the best out of the younger squad members like Keanu Baccus and Jonathan Aspropotamitis.

Perth Glory – Kangaroo

Highly territorial, kangaroos can be ferocious when it comes to defending their turf. Glory are a side which enjoy their home comforts with Andy Keogh and Diego Castro pulling the punches up front for Kenny Lowe’s men.

Central Coast Mariners – Giraffe

Yet to unlock their true potential, the Mariners are like a baby giraffe learning to take their first steps. It may take some time for the Mariners to rebuild but they will eventually be standing tall and looking down at everyone beneath them.

Wellington Phoenix – Sloth

Watches its competitors from afar as it slowly comes to grips with its surroundings. The sloth can remain motionless and inactive for an extended period. With no real objective, like the sloth, Wellington seem happy to remain rooted to the bottom of the ladder.
