Melbourne Victory have quickly returned to form with a 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

A 1-0 loss to Perth Glory last round ended Victory’s three match winning streak but they bounced back in style against the Wanderers to continue their push towards the A-League finals.

A tough six day break travelling back from Western Australia didn’t take its toll as Victory did what they needed to do to prove their finals credentials.

Leroy George opened the scoring after half an hour via a free kick that took a heavy deflection while Besart Berisha converted from the spot that gave the hosts a half time advantage. Before the penalty kick, two red cards were dished out to Michael Thwaite and Kosta Barbarouses.

Thomas Deng hit a wonderful volley in the second half to give Victory their cushion in the margin. A thrilling strike by the Victory full-back will definitely be one for the memory bank.

A huge talking point out of this match was the Barbarouses incident that VAR had a real close look at, for a stomp on Kearyn Baccus.

While a decision was made it did take over four minutes and that was after Thwaite was given a second yellow that conceded the penalty. Berisha had to wait a considerable amount of time before he could take his spot-kick.

A clumsy stomp by Barbarouses will be closely scrutinised by the Match Review Panel and appears likely to face punishment. If that’s the case, Victory may have to go on without one of their star performers next week against Wellington Phoenix.
