Western Sydney Wanderers had their finals hopes dashed in a 3-2 loss to Adelaide United at ANZ Stadium on Sunday night in the final round of the regular A-League season.

Following Brisbane Roar’s result against Perth on Saturday night the Wanderers were given a clear ultimatum: win or their season would be finished.

Adelaide United would retain 5th spot regardless of the outcome but did not look to lull their way through the clash and came out pressing.

After a closely contested opening period the Wanderers were first off the mark when Oriol Riera successfully found the back of the net for the 15th time this season.

Alvaro Cejudo cut and turned his way through the midfield before latching onto a long range effort which fumbled out of the hands of Paul Izzo. Riera pounced on the loose ball but was brought down by the keeper and the Spaniard coolly slid his penalty into the bottom right corner.

Adelaide United were quick to produce a backlash courtesy of a brilliant strike from Papa Babacar Diawara.

The Senegalese striker picked up a poorly judged long ball which found its way past Jack Clisby before impressively poking an outside boot shot past Vedran Janjetovic for the equaliser.

Benjamin Garuccio was unnerving the Wanderers backline with his crosses from the wider right role however Nathan Konstandopoulos proved the inspiration for the Reds second goal of the night.

The midfielder cut and wove his way inside the area before squeezing out a shot which deflected right to the feet of Daniel Adlung who had perched himself at the edge of the box.

The German belted the loose ball past the outstretched arms of Janjetovic in the 39th minute to put Adelaide in front.

Just a few minutes short of the eventful interval the Wanderers again restored parity after Marcelo Carrusca drifted into the box, prodding home a header supplied from a beautifully strung cross from Raul Llorente.

Josep Gombau’s side were dealt an immense blow in the 62nd minute when Keanu Baccus was flashed a red after kicking out at Johan Absolonsen following a gritty challenge.

Play had continued however the VAR brought back the controversial incident, sending Baccus to the stands for the retaliation and setting the tone for a comfortable win for Adelaide.

Brendan Santalab entered the fray attempting to provide some inspiration for the struggling side but Adelaide struck home again to officially bury their finals hopes.

Following a counter attack Nikola Mileusnic slipped in a cross from the left allowing Ryan Kitto to simply push it in from close range for the Red’s third and final goal of the evening.

The Wanderers last-ditch efforts weren’t enough to etch out another goal and Adelaide closed off the final game of the season with relative ease.
