Melbourne Victory are once again A-League Champions after an early Kosta Barbarouses goal was enough to win the match 1-0 against Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night.

After the pre match entertainment was done the capacity crowd had hardly settled settled in their seats before the Victory supporters burst into life as Barbarouses scrambled the ball into the net from a corner to give the away side the lead.

The Jets took the initiative after Victory’s opener and were unlucky not to grab an equaliser but for some sublime Lawrence Thomas saves including an unbelievable double save to deny Riley McGree and Jason Hoffman.

For all their pushing however Newcastle just weren’t able to find an equaliser and went into the break a goal down.

The second half got underway with Victory showing a greater attacking intent than they had in the first half as they looked to build on their one goal advantage.

Newcastle didn’t possess the same firepower they did in the first half and struggled to create any meaningful changes in the second 45.

While the Jets were throwing men forward James Troisi worked an angle in the box and hit the outside of post to deny Victory what would’ve been a winning goal.

Melbourne maintained a strong defensive line and applied pressure in midfield which forced Newcastle to take the aerial route forward to little effect.

The game for the Jets imploded in extra time when Roy O’Donovan kicked keeper Lawrence Thomas in the face after the keeper had collected a lofted ball.

There wasn’t time for much else after Thomas recovered and it wasn’t long before the referee’s whistle ushered in Victory’s latest reign as Champions of the A-League.
