It was a tense finish to an entertaining game, as Perth Glory held off Brisbane Roar despite a late red card and Roar goal to win 2-1 at nib Stadium on Saturday night.

The Glory went closest to striking the first blow, with Jamie Young pulling off an astonishing double save to deny Andy Keogh the opener from two close range headers in the 6th minute.

But the Irishman’s luck soon turned when he tucked away the first goal of the game in the 15th minute, after Chris Ikonomidis tore down the left flank and played a low ball into his path.

Ikonomidis was a thorn in the side of the Roar for the entire first half, providing the defence a lot of headaches with his pace and trickery.

The second half began in comical fashion for the Glory, as Liam Reddy was forced into saving a deflection off Shane Lowry that went hurtling towards his near post.

The Glory’s lead doubled in the 63rd minute when Keogh’s darting run into the box and cross found the boot of Connor O’Toole, who deflected the ball into his own net.

Unlike the first two rounds, the Glory carried their form from the first half into the second, doubling their lead through persistent pressure on the Roar’s defence.

The complexion of the game changed in the 83rd minute, however, when Tomislav Mrcela brought Adam Taggart down in the box, earning a red card for his challenge.

Taggart, the former Glory man, stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball home, bringing the score back to 2-1.

The late red card and goal did little to change the outcome of the game, as the Glory held firm for their second consecutive victory, leaving the Roar without a win in the opening three rounds.
