Melbourne Victory left McDonald Jones Stadium with their first win of the season after defeating Newcastle Jets 1-0.

The Jets were unable to capitalise on a dominant first half and Victory were able to snatch all three points courtesy of Terry Antonis’ strike.

After a scoreless first half, the Jets would have been disappointed not to be leading after 45 minutes. They had the better of the chances and looked fluid and dangerous in attack, with Ronny Vargas hitting the crossbar at the 10 minute mark.

Vargas and Jair stood out, linking up creatively in the final third and putting on an exciting display of skill.

For Victory, Keisuke Honda was always looking to orchestrate attacks from midfield, especially on the counter attack while James Troisi was always involved in Melbourne’s attacks, but lacked the edge to cause any damage in the first half.

The second half started with Victory coming strong out of the blocks.

The game started to open up, and both teams were exchanging attacks in an end-to-end fashion. Kosta Barbarouses had a handful of chances, and was denied by the offside flag (this time *ahem*).

Victory opened the scoring at 71 minutes, with Terry Antonis firing a sucker punch from just outside the area. The Jets were forced to respond or die, and Merrick switched to three at the back in the hopes of overloading Victory’s box with attacking numbers.

The Jets threw everything forward in response to the goal, but Victory were able to weather the storm and leave Newcastle with their first win of the season.
