10-man Adelaide United held on to draw 2-2 with Western Sydney Wanderers in a feisty draw marred with controversy.

The Boxing Day clash had become subject to careless giveaways in midfield and seemed destined for a draw but that changed in the 45th minute.

The United fans were incensed when ex-United player Jordan O’Doherty was caught by the trailing leg of Nathan Konstandopoulos leaving Peter Green no choice but to award a penalty.

Paul Izzo did well initially to deny Riera’s penalty which sent him diving low to his right and sent the crowd into raptures.

The ball bobbed up off the save to a waiting Riera who made no mistake this time, unleashing a powerful volley into the bottom left corner to give Wanderers the lead.

After the break, United restored parity through a Nikola Mileusnić tap-in which caught Wanderers napping at the back.

Mileusnić was found somewhat fortunately at the back-post after a deflected cross from the left wing managed to elude the several Wanderers defenders stationed in the box.

It was Mileusnić at the double for United, as 10 minutes later the winger was set through by a splitting ball leaving him in a foot-race with Tarek Elrich.

Elrich succumbed to Mileusnić’s speed leaving him one-on-one with Suman before Mileusnić showed considerable class slotting it past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

The game changed again as Jordan Elsey received a second yellow-card for his errant elbow which left Oriol Riera on the ground.

With the advantage, Keanu Baccus played a gilt-edged ball to Josh Risdon who was afforded a vast amount of space.

Risdon played a low-ball to former United player Bruce Kamau, who powered home a goal into the upper echelon of the net to level the scores.

The draw means United and Wanderers miss a chance to gain ground on the top five sides with tough fixtures against Newcastle Jets and Melbourne City respectively, looming.
