In star man Diego Castro’s first start of the season, the Glory kept their first home clean sheet against Melbourne City to win 1-0 and regain top spot on the A-League ladder.

After a tight opening to the game City came closest to breaking the deadlock when a spillage from Liam Reddy on the goal line fell to Nathaniel Atkinson, who blew his close range shot over the bar.

Glory centre-back Matthew Spiranovic’s first appearance for his new side ended frustratingly on the half hour mark when the Socceroo suffered to an innocuous injury, and was replaced by Dino Djulbic in the heart of Glory’s defence.

Glory’s first real attempt was a scuffed shot from Tomislav Mrcela after an accidental Cruyff turn, which spoke volumes of the standard of the game leading into half time.

Late in the half however Chris Ikonomidis, Glory’s man on fire, found himself in the right place at the right time to put Glory 1-0 ahead.

A scuffed shot from Andy Keogh looped over the defenders straight into the path of Ikonomidis, who tucked his fifth goal of the season calmly into the net.

Early in the second half Castro exploded into the game, turning on the edge of the box and firing a shot on his weaker left foot which called Eugene Galekovic into a diving save.

And the shots kept flying for the Glory, when Brandon Wilson teed off from outside the box, his thunderous effort skewing over the bar and into the stands.

After the Glory’s rapid start to the second half the game settled into a lull, with neither side being able to string together any spell of domination.

With 15 minutes to play Glory almost struck again, when Mrcela’s looping header hung for an age in the air and dropped directly onto the crossbar and away.

Late in the game Curtis Good was sent off after a soft challenge on Ivan Franjic earned him a controversial second yellow card.

With the one-man advantage the Glory waltzed to a 1-0 victory, climbing over Melbourne Victory back to the top of the ladder.
