The Newcastle Jets claim victory against the Central Coast Mariners at Gosford in a fiery F3 Derby, making them the first side to win four-in-a-row in the historic fixture.

The first half began with the Mariners getting the better of the ball and consequentially attacking opportunities.

The game began to slow down with what felt like foul after foul, with Michael McGlinchey, Jason Hoffman, Mario Shabow, Connor Pain and Glen Moss receiving yellow cards in a feisty first half.

Central Coast local and Mariners captain Matt Simon was heavily influential for his side, and ended up on the score sheet in the 36th minute.

It was his seventh goal in 20 derbies against the Jets, which was created by some brilliant one-touch passing between himself and Matt Millar. A thing to behold when Matt’s combine.

The Jets had a chance to equalise just three minutes later when Vargas had a curved effort go just wide of the right upright.

Just before half-time Connor Pain did brilliantly to break down the left side and draw a foul on the edge of the box, resulting in a yellow card for Jason Hoffman

The Jets came out of the blocks quickly in the second half with Ronald Vargas creating some good chances for Newcastle, one of those drawing a yellow card to Kye Rowles.

Connor Pain had a golden chance to double his sides lead in the 63rd minute when he caught Jason Hoffman napping in possession, creating a one-on-one chance.

He took his shot early and was straight at Glen Moss.

Hoffman went from almost-zero to hero when a Jair corner found his head, who tucked it away into the far post beating keeper Adam Pearce and Andrew Hoole who was marking the back post.

In the 80th minute the Jets nearly doubled their lead, with a goal mouth scramble ending in a disallowed goal due to offside.

Only two minutes later the Jets took the lead thanks to a brilliant cross by substitute Kaine Sheppard who found Ronald Vargas in the box who finished it home.

The game ended 2-1 to Newcastle.

The result sees the Jets climb up to seventh on the ladder, with the Mariners well and truly planted on the bottom of the ladder, winless so far this season.
