The Jets extended their winning streak to five against the Mariners in a tense 1-0 win. Kaine Sheppard’s goal in the first half made all the difference in a tight contest in Newcastle.

The first half was an uninspired and cagey affair with both sides heading into the sheds scoreless.

A Nikolai Topor-Stanley goal was ruled offside after the captain volleyed home a Dimi Petratos free kick in an offside position. Kaine Sheppard also had a half chance when his chipped effort was cleared off the line by Jonathan Aspropotamitis.

The Mariners also had a handful of fruitless attempts in the first half. On twenty seven minutes, an Andrew Hoole diagonal found the head of Jordan Murray in the box who was unable to generate any power or direction to challenge Glen Moss.

Aside from a brief spell of push and shove between Daniel Georgievski and Jack Clisby following a late challenge, the F3 Derby was a considerably flat outing and that lacked any real cutting edge or ruthlessness in the first half.

The Jets took initiative in the second half and took the lead on 54 minutes. Petratos slipped the ball in behind for Roy O’Donovan who spotted the parallel run of Kaine Sheppard to his right hand side. O’Donovan slid the ball across the face of goal into the path of Sheppard who stroked home the tap in with his left foot.

The Mariners came close to equalising shortly after when Jordan Murray’s close range shot was blocked heroically by Ivan Vujica in the six yard box.

Lachlan Jackson contributed a second goal saving block later in the game. Aspropotamitis’ header struck the crossbar, which deflected to Connor Pain whose effort was blocked and swept away by the Newcastle defender.

The Mariners had a flutter of late opportunities at the end of the game, but they were unable to claw their way back into the game.

The Jets put an end to their three game losing streak with their fifth consecutive win in the F3 Derby as the Mariners’ horror season continues.
