Wellington kept Adelaide United goalless for a valuable point on the road in a feisty affair which saw cards aplenty.

The best chance of the first half fell to midfield enforcer Vince Lia in the 43rd minute, who was found relatively free inside the 18-yard box from out wide only to be denied by a strong Filip Kurto save.

Wellington started the second-half better as Sarpreet Singh found some touch in midfield after laying on a delicate through-ball for David Williams who fired straight into an on-rushing Paul Izzo.

Adelaide fashioned a chance out of nowhere in the 55th minute as Craig Goodwin sent in a dangerous ball from a corner set-play.

Goodwin’s ball found a rising Jordan Elsey who thundered the header towards goal only to be denied by the sharp reflexes of Kurto once again only just managing to stop the ball from crossing the line.

The game had threatened to tip-over for some time and it became reality when VAR confirmed Mandi Sosa kicked Vince Lia. The decision sparked a melee which saw Mandi Sosa receive his marching orders.

Prior to his send off, Mandi had been engaged in a physical battle with Lia which climaxed when the player delivered a late and deliberate kick into Lia’s body which was strewn on the ground from a previous challenge.

Despite the man-advantage and holding the majority of possession, Adelaide was unable to finish a chance to break the ledger in the final minutes with the game finishing nil-all.

The draw extends Wellington’s unbeaten run to six games for the first time since round 22 2014/15 while Adelaide stretches it’s unbeaten record over Wellington to 10 games.

The draw consolidates both teams in the top six which is key as Adelaide host traditional rivals Melbourne while Wellington travel to Western Sydney Wanderers next round.
