Brisbane Roar have won the National Youth League Grand Final after defeating the Western Sydney Wanderers 3-1 at ANZ Stadium.

Goals to all three attacking players for the Brisbane side were enough to crown them Y-League champions after Friday nights performance.

The game started off slowly, with both teams getting lots of touches on the ball but without any real attacking opportunities. The first 20 minutes were dominated by open play, with the Wanderers and Brisbane testing each other out in a physical performance.

Both Mohamad Adam and Thomas Aquilina had early chances in the final third, but to no avail.

The away side went in front mid-way through the first half when the ball bounced into the path of Shannon Brady, who took a touch before placing his shot across the keeper and into bottom left corner.

The Wanderers responded with a number of their own chances, most notably a powerful strike from Andrea Agamemnonos which was denied by Brisbane’s goalkeeper Macklin Freke.

As the game went on, Brisbane Roar began to have the majority of the attacking chances as the momentum shifted to the away team. Roar players Daniel Leck and Mirza Muratovic had their own set of chances towards the end of the first half.

Leck put the Roar in front by two goals after a pinpoint cross found him at the top of the box, contributing to his teams’ 2-0 lead at half time.

The second half started much like the first, with the Wanderers spending considerable time in the attacking half and winning multiple corners before they began to lose momentum of the match.

Brisbane started to come back on top, with Muratovic scoring the Roar’s third goal midway through the second half. Brady’s cut back and precision pass set up the striker, who finished from close range to give his side the three goal buffer.

The Wanderers continued pushing for a goal throughout the second half, with a cross rushing past the goal line only centimetres from Manyiel Riel Majok, who couldn’t get on the end of it.

With just over ten minutes of regulation time remaining, the Wanderers were able to get a goal back. Tass Mourdoukoutas finished from a corner, giving his side a glimmer of hope towards the final minutes of the match. Mohamad Adam had two close chances at the death of the game, only to be denied by a tight roar defence.

Mourdoukoutas’ goal wasn’t enough to bring the home side back into the match. The Y-League Grand Final finishes with Brisbane Roar taking the Championship, with the final score being 3-1.
