An ANZAC day goal-fest at Suncorp Stadium sees Adelaide United hold onto fourth place as they beat Brisbane Roar 5-3.

Adelaide started the match on the front foot, a near-unmarked Nikola Mileusnic finding the back of Jamie Young’s net in just the fourth minute after heading home a cross from Ryan Kitto.

Brisbane’s first goal of the afternoon came against the run of play, Dylan Wenzel-Halls hammering the ball past Paul Izzo after the Adelaide goalkeeper successfully parried Matt McKay’s initial shot.

The host’s next goal came in contentious circumstances, Nicholas D’Agostino breaking free to score a wonderful headed goal well into the fifth minute of first half injury time.

Perhaps justly for Adelaide, George Blackwood was able to level the scores early into the second half, Craig Goodwin finding him for the easiest of tap-ins.

The second-half drama continued, D’Agostino winning a penalty as he was bundled over in the Adelaide box by Izzo – a scuffed would-be panenka from Bautheac snatching back a one goal Brisbane lead in the 61st minute.

The lead only lasted ten minutes however, Craig Goodwin weaving through Brisbane’s defense for a close-range finish.

Second-half substitute Papa Diawara got in the action, scoring his first goal in over a year as he beat Brisbane’s offside trap to drive home a Scott Galloway-delivered cross.

Spanish midfielder Isaias capped off the Adelaide victory, skinning makeshift right back Daniel Leck and side-footing the ball into Young’s bottom right corner.

Retiring club legend Matt McKay was given a standing ovation upon his injury-time substitution – the day’s result taking nothing from what has been a stellar career for the Brisbane footballing icon.

Brisbane’s loss mercifully ends what has been a horror A-League season for them – newly announced head coach Robbie Fowler no doubt planning wholesale changes at the club.
