Saturday’s clash between the Newcastle Jets and the Western Sydney Wanderers at McDonald Jones Stadium turned into a five goal thriller out of nowhere. The Wanderers had a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Newcastle managed to turn it around and were 3-2 winners at the final whistle.

The first half didn’t provide many chances for either team. Newcastle had their fair share of the ball in the Wanderers’ half, but they weren’t able to generate many high quality chances.

The Wanderers opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when Alexander Baumjohann swung his free kick onto Rashid Mahazi’s unmarked head, who directed his header into the far corner with speed and accuracy.

The away team headed into the sheds 1-0 leaders, and things were looking bleak for Newcastle.

Newcastle started the second half on the front foot and seemed to approach the game with more attacking intent. Their efforts were rewarded just past the hour when Roy O’Donovan equalised with a classy finish with his right foot inside the 18.

The Jets carried on with the momentum of the equaliser and took the lead miraculously from a Dimi Petratos corner. A right footed in-swinger on the left corner flag crept it’s way into Vedran Janjetovic’s near post who was unable to palm it away.

The Wanderers responded promptly. Keanu Baccus found himself in some space on the edge of the box and sent an absolute rocket in off the crossbar over the head of Glenn Moss. It was 2-2 with 20 minutes to play and it was set up for a lively finale.

19 year old substitute Angus Thurgate claimed the winner in the closing stages when he finished off a loose ball in the box with conviction.

The Jets were able to hold off a late Wanderers onslaught and maintain a very distant finals qualification dream.
