Football Happens In Australia, Too.

-

So for a while I’ve been thinking about how to go about writing a comic that addresses the English attitude to Australian soccer. It’s not an easy subject to approach – the A-League hasn’t penetrated much into the British football consciousness. Ask a British football fan to name an A-League team and they’ll probably say “Hmm, err, y’know…that one Robbie Fowler plays for.” A better-informed one might have a little giggle at the thought of Shane Smeltz.

But hey, give it time. MLS was only formed in 1996 and, despite the continued sneers of many Europeans, those guys nevertheless have Henry, Ljungberg, Márquez, Donovan and Mista to add to the fashion mogul and occasional footballer they acquired in 2007.

Domestic football in England and Australia may not be comparable, but at least the Aussies will always have the edge at international level, regardless of the sport. If I remember rightly, the last time Australia played England it was 3-1 to the Socceroos, with Francis Jeffers scoring England’s goal. Yeah, seriously. Francis Jeffers.
