There have been numerous talks of comebacks for the teams scraping the barrell of the Hyundai A-League ladder. None have come to fruition, and anyone hoping for a Betfair miracle over Christmas has probably had too much eggnog.
After winning their first game, Sydney FC found a brief spell of form, only to come crashing back to reality with a 4-0 loss to the Central Coast Mariners. Their clash tonight against Melbourne Heart has them fighting for not only a new piece of silverware, but with their dignity and a place in the top six. Heart are only slight favorites ($2.10) over Sydney ($2.26).
North Queensland Fury started the season in decent touch but lost form after only three rounds. In late November a draw with league leaders Brisbane Roar and a win against 3rd placed Gold Coast could have had punters second guessing their decision to write off Fury as finals contenders ($75 to win the Grand Final). However, a string of injuries has proved difficult to overcome, and the Lime Green now sit 11th.
Perth Glory last night defeated second placed Adelaide United 4-2 and lifted themselves, at least temporarily, from the bottom of the table. Robbie Fowler was in season best form and grabbed two goals for his efforts. The heated affair perhaps indicates the Glory feel all is not lost – this feature on Futbal Mondial, filmed several months ago, has Perth talking an ACL berth. There are no odds offered on this eventuality.
