Cannons blast Hume from the top

-

Hume City blew a golden opportunity to claim the Minor Premiership in the Alanic Victorian Premier League when they slipped up to second placed Oakleigh Cannons at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Saturday.

On a blustery, cold and dark day Hume had the majority of the play early as Oakleigh racked up the fouls.
Hume were unlucky early on not to receive a Penalty when Zoran Petrevski was brought down by Oakleigh (and Melbourne Heart) ‘Keeper Peter Zois. Petrevski received the yellow card for simulation and Oakleigh were able to score minutes later via a Frankie Lagana goal on 32 minutes.
Hume continued to have control of the game and were again led by inspirational captain (and Football Sack favorite) Andy Vlahos but couldn’t find the cutting edge finish.
Oakleigh kicked with the huge breeze at their backs in the second half and took control of the game with former A-League player Sean Ontong the catalyst in the midfield. Hayden Doyle doubled the lead from a good strike on 75 minutes which was backed up with a decent running celebration.
Zois was rock solid in the final few minutes as Hume City desperately tried to peg the lead back and gain the point needed to seal the minor premiership.

Oakleigh were far too good in the end and blew the race for top spot wide open with their away win.
Hume City now find themselves with some work to do after three straight losses and face a tough task at Melbourne Knights in the final round.

Oakleigh, who are now even on points on top of the table have a home fixture against Dandenong Thunder to round out their home and away fixtures.
