WASL: Knights continue rollercoaster season

-

Cockburn City 2-0 Western Knights

Cockburn have given themselves a survival lifeline after defeating Western Knights 2-0 at Dalmatinac Park. Scott McCulloch opened the scoring for the hosts early on, and it set the tone for what was a frantic and occasionally feisty match. Cockburn were the dominant force throughout, and added a second sixty minutes in. Tempers flared in the latter stages, with Knights’ Duncan Hind being shown a straight red card for a two footed tackle, and Cockburn’s Ewan Grant being sent to the stands after receiving a second yellow for kicking the ball away at the award of a free kick.

Bayswater City 1-1 Mandurah City

Mandurah City secured a point at Frank Drago Reserve after a contentious late penalty denied the home side a much needed victory. Gustavo Marulanda opened the scoring for the hosts, beating the offside trap and coolly slotting home. Mandurah were reduced to ten men when Matt Stares was given his marching orders mid-way through the second half, but managed to snatch a point when Ivan Zuvela scored a contentious penalty in stoppage time.

Stirling Lions 3-1 Sorrento

Jamie Watt was the hero at Macedonia Park as Stirling Lions ran out 3-1 winners over Sorrento. His hat-trick was the difference between the sides. He netted in the 16th, 56th and 68th minute to give Stirling coach Doug Hesketh his first home win since taking over from Paul Lincoln. The visitors pulled one back in the 77th minute when the unfortunate Clayton Arnez put through his own net.

Inglewood United 0-3 Balcatta

A dominant second half performance saw Balcatta run out 3-0 winners at 6PR Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Inglewood were marginally the better side in the first half, and were desperately unlucky when striker Rory Grant struck the woodwork not once, but twice, in ten minutes. Daniel Niederburger continued his fine goal scoring form, netting a brace. He was joined on the score sheet by Jovo Pavlovic. Comfortable for the league leaders in the end, as they continue their march towards the title.

ECU Joondalup 1-2 Perth SC

Perth SC just about kept in touch with Balcatta at the top of the table after a 2-1 victory at ECU Joondalup Stadium A. David Onoforo opened the scoring very early on, latching on to an Antonio Naglieri lob and heading home. Greg Sharland scored a brilliant free kick in the 67th minute before Dale McCulloch poked home in stoppage time. It was to prove nothing more than a consolation in the end, as Perth held firm to record the win.

Floreat Athena 7-1 NTC

Floreat Athena thumped NTC at E&D Litis Stadium 7-1 on Friday night. The hosts opened up a three goal lead through Michael Van Dongen, Paul Van Dongen and Kyle Moran. Reece VIitiglia pulled one back in the 42nd minute, but Calum O’Connell restored Athena’s three goal lead in first half stoppage time. Paul Van Dongen added his second in the 47th minute before further strikes from James Isaia and Liam Boland completed the rout.
