Sydney FC have blown their chance to surge into fourth on the Hyundai A-League ladder, going down 1-0 to a traveling Wellington Phoenix. A crowd of 10 165 saw Sydney again go behind early at the SFS and the home side never recovered, wasting a golden opportunity to firm their place in the top six.

In their first attacking opportunity of the match Wellington found the lead after only 12 minutes when Tony Lochhead crossed a beautifully curved ball into the box which found Paul Ifill’s head and consequently the back of the net.
The single goal was enough to secure Phoenix all three points, leaving Sydney to rue many missed chances, none moreso than Michael Beauchamp’s skied shot over the crossbar in the 92nd minute despite an open goal.
