The Central Coast Mariners have secured their first win of the 2012/13 Hyundai A-League season in a bruising encounter with the Perth Glory.
Perth Glory were unable to claim their first victory at Bluetongue Stadium after a deep, majestic pass from young Mariners defender Trent Sainsbury was hooked around the Perth keeper by substitute Daniel McBreen in the 69th minute.
The McBreen goal was enough for the Mariners to claim the three points on offer in the replay of the 2011/13 season’s preliminary final.
Sainsbury was the match’s standout performer, providing the Mariners home crowd with a solid and at times inspired performance from the back.
Mariners defenders Rose, Sainsbury, Bojic and Zwaanwijk held a strong line for keeper Matty Ryan in a performance that suggested that losing captain Alex Wilkinson may prove to be less harmful to the team’s defensive unit than many had thought.
