W-LEAGUE: Wanderers draw with Canberra in tight battle

-

Reigning champions Canberra United made a late brace to draw with newcomers Western Sydney Wanderers. Teigen Allen opened the scoring with a 22 yard bolter and then in the last quarter of the match Caitlin Munoz converted a well finished free-kick.

Canberra United went on the attack in the first few moments in the game and somehow the ball didn’t get in the back of the net deflecting off the cross bar right at a Canberra player but Wanderers goalkeeper Elizabeth Durack saved the shot and kept the scores at bay.
The away side continued to possess the ball in the opening quarter of the half with Wanderers only having one real chance with a cross whipped in and just bounced off the top of the crossbar. Eight minutes later Canberra striker Ashleigh Sykes had a chance to open the scoring but shot it straight into the hands of soon to be Harvard University student Elizabeth Durack.
In the 22nd minute Western Sydney scored an absolute cracker of a goal from 22 yards out with Teigen Allen shooting right into the corner of the net to open the scoring for the Wanderers.
After the goal from the home side the game opened up with chances by both sides although Western Sydney were looking the more dangerous against last season’s champions.
Late in the first half Wanderers midfielder Loise Fors made a brilliant turn and shot at goal although it curled into the side netting.

Early on in the second half Canberra’s Michelle Heyman had a brilliant chance with the shot deflecting off the side post only to be judged offside. Canberra were already starting to show some fight to draw the scores level.
58th minute and Canberra had yet another chance to equalise but from right in front Michelle Heyman shot it right over the crossbar in disbelief from the crowd and the Wanderers goalkeeper. The second half was end to end action with Wanderers having a chance minutes later with a header nearly going in the back of the net.

With 17 minutes to play Canberra United break level with a brilliant curling free kick from Caitlin Munoz. From the right side Munoz looked to be aiming for one of her teammates but instead it curled into the top right of the net.
In injury time Canberra captain Ellie Brush received a second yellow but it wasn’t enough time for Wanderers to snatch the 3 points. The end to end match between the champions and the newcomers ended in a 1-1 draw.
