Sydney beaten at Suncorp as sun rises in morning

Good Friday? More like Great Thursday for Brisbane Roar fans.

Brisbane’s win was the warmest appreciation of Thursday since Rebecca Black’s Friday was released.

The night was Roar’s from an early stage as they led from the midway point of the first-half.

After Besart Berisha’s chest touch had wronged him seconds earlier, Alessandro Del Piero ensured the next chance would be far simpler.

The Italian maestro showed sympathy for his nation’s defeat of Germany at the 2006 World Cup by gifting a horror backwards ball to Thomas Broich on the half hour mark and the German took advantage, sliding it across goal for Berisha to comfortably smash home.

Sydney almost found a fortuitous equaliser shortly after from a deflected cross but Theo did well to scramble it clear.

Half-time brought about the end of a more enterprising Sydney spell as Del Piero floated a chip inches wide, butt the score remained 1-0 at the break.

The Sky Blues couldn’t shake their defensive sloppiness after the interval, however, and it meant Brisbane went 2-0 up shortly after the restart when Seb Ryall’s pass out of defence was pounced on by Berisha and side-footed home with ease by Steven Lustica.

It got worse for both Sydney and Ryall beyond the hour when the defender headed wide a free header from the easiest of positions.

Ivan Franjic then popped up on the left of attack and exuded belief, curling a beauty into the far corner to make it 3-0, only for Sydney to claw the deficit back to two with moments when James Donachie’s scrambling challenge was punished by both the referee and Del Piero.

The exchange of goals was consistent with a thoroughly entertaining affair which secures 5th place for Brisbane, and leaves Sydney in hope of favourable results elsewhere.
