Second placed Brisbane Roar have thrashed last placed Newcastle Jets 6-2 at Wanderers Oval in Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
The defending champions started the match strongly and scored two quick goals in the 17th and 19th minutes through Vedrana Popovic and Emily Gielnik to take control of the match.
Gielnik scored again just after the half hour mark before two goals early in the second half via Tameka Butt and Clare Polkinghorne pushed the score line out to 5-0.
The Jets pegged two goals back through Tara Andrews and Rhali Dobson but a late goal through Roar substitute Hayley Raso rounded out an emphatic victory.
The match got underway in warm and blustery conditions and it was the visitors who quickly asserted their dominance with a glut of possession and territory in the early stages.
After keeping the visitors at bay the Jets should have opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Rhali Dobson but she fired her shot from close range over the bar after some great build up from Hannah Beard.
But it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 17thminute after some scrappy Jets defending inside their own box let Vedrana Popovic slot home an easy finish past 17 year-old debutant goal keeper Claire Coelho.
Brisbane quickly extended their advantage two minutes later after Popovic was left alone down the right flank and her inviting cross found Emily Gielnik inside the area who calmly slotted the ball home.
The visitors made it three-nil in the 32nd minute with Gielnik grabbing a double after a lovely through ball put her through one on one and she dinked it over the onrushing Coelho.
Brisbane continued to dominate at the start of the second half and extended their advantage after a huge deflection bobbled to Tameka Butt and she cleverly headed it home into an empty net to make it 4-0.
A clumsy challenge from Jets substitute Sophie Nenadovic brought down Butt inside the box and Clare Polkinghorne fired home from the spot to stretch the visitor’s advantage.
The energetic Rhali Dobson was impressive for the Jets and her enthusiasm won the home side a penalty in the 73rd minute after she was brought down and Tara Andrews converted from the spot.
Dobson snared a goal for herself less than five minutes later after she was put in behind the Roar defence before slotting the ball past Roar keeper Kate Stewart.
The visitors added one more right on the full-time whistle through substitute Hayley Raso who got in behind the Jets defence before calmly finishing sublimely over the helpless Coelho to rubber stamp an emphatic victory.
