W-League: Adelaide stuns Canberra to claim first points

-

Adelaide United has caused one of the upsets of the season, the Reds earning their first points of the year in the process, downing Canberra United 3-2.

The result is Adelaide’s first ever win in Canberra, as the team from the nation’s capital continues to struggle and have dropped out of the top four for the first time this season.

A brace to captain and striker Kristy Moore set up the win, as Adelaide punished Canberra for wasting a large number of scoring opportunities.

A dour first half burst to life minutes before the interval when Adelaide took a surprise lead. A long goal kick from Melissa Barbieri sailed over the Canberra defence, Moore was quickest to the ball before unleashing a shot back across her body into the far corner, catching Canberra keeper Melissa Maizels out of position.

It was a tough break for Canberra who had a comfortable grip on the game. Despite the setback Canberra forced their way back into the match just two minutes after half-time. Michelle Heyman adding another goal to her tally poking home from close range following a goal mouth scramble.

However, on the hour mark Adelaide were back in front as Moore added her second for the day. Reacting quickest to a loose ball in the box, Moore smashed home a drive into the bottom corner, giving Maizels no chance.

With the home crowd forcing them forward, Canberra equalised with 15 minutes to go, as Caitlin Munoz headed home from a corner.

But they had no time to celebrate as substitute Tiarn Powell pounced onto a rebounded shot first to put Adelaide in front for the third time in the match.

Despite Canberra’s best efforts, Adelaide clutched on to claim a much-needed first three points for the season.
