W-League: Jets target finals after Lady Reds victory

-

Finals football now stands within the Newcastle Jets’ grasp, and a 2-0 over Adelaide in this delayed Round Eight match has kept the dream alive.

Pushing onto the offensive fast, the Jets looked dominant from the kick-off, claiming possession and pace down both wings and terrorizing the Adelaide United side.

A chance came off a perfectly delivered cross, with Libby Copus-Brown – starting for the first time this year – heading the ball into the center of the eighteen yard box, straight to Victoria Huster’s feet, and the midfielder was able to strike the ball cleanly into the back of the net.

Taking chance after chance against the Lady Reds, the Jets made their presence on the field felt, with long range shots coming from Copus-Brown, as well as Tara Andrews and Emily Van Egmond. Adelaide ‘keeper Barbieri was hard pressed to keep her side from a humiliating scoreline.

The first half closed out with almost twenty shots from the Jets to a rivaled two by Adelaide, and the home team looked set to capitalize on their brilliant form.

The Jets chances finally came to fruition with a cross from Yeoman-Dale that found Dobson standing free in the center of the net, delivering it home to give Newcastle a two goal buffer over the goal-less Lady Reds.

A late penalty shot from Marie-Woods almost claimed the goal, but Southwell maintained her cleansheet, and the Jets slowly kept the game in check until the whistle was blown, claiming a vital three points at home.

Looking forward to their last game, the Newcastle Jets now sit one point behind both Canberra United and Sydney FC, with Sydney now their final hurdle in their chance to slip into the top four and compete in the Finals Series.
